BENGALURU: A day after rolling out the Gruha Jyothi guarantee programme which provides 200 units of free electricity a month to households – if certain conditions are met – the energy department on Sunday announced a few relaxations since more than one crore eligible households are yet to enrol.
The department clarified that consumers with arrears will also be eligible for free power albeit with an extended deadline of September30 to clear dues. Reiterating that there is no last date for enrolment, the department said that if consumers enrol by July 25, the benefit will kick in from the same month since the meter reading cycle for all electricity supply companies (Escoms) is from 25 to 25 of every month.
“If citizens enrol by July 25, they will get ‘zero bills’ from August if consumption is less than 200 units on an average,” said an official. “If citizens enrol after July 25, the benefit will kick in only in the bill for September, “ the official said.
