While the State’s electricity demand is breaking records this year, the city’s power consumption is much lower than last year.
While the highest demand notched up in the State was 16,151 megawatts (MW), recorded on April 3, the city’s power demand has been below 3,000 MW for most of April. In 2018, the peak demand in Chennai was 3,537 MW in April, said officials of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).
Tangedco officials were expecting the city’s demand to touch 3,500 MW, but it barely crossed 3,000 MW early this month, said a senior official. In preceding years, the peak demand in the city has hovered in the range of 2,800 MW to 3,000 MW, the official said.
