MUMBAI: More than 3,000 consumers in the thickly populated Siddharth Colony at Chembur were plunged into darkness as electricity supply to their homes and shops was disconnected on Wednesday. Adani Electricity took the ‘drastic step’ after non-payment of bills to the tune of Rs 77 crore for over a decade.
This is the second time in the past 13 months that the colony is facing power outage for non-payment of dues. In June last year, the power cuts continued for four consecutive days. The supply was restored after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis intervened and residents gave an undertaking to “settle the arrears in a few months”.
“We were lenient and extended the payment deadline to December 22 last year, but the bills remained unpaid. Arrears, which were Rs 63 crore in early 2018, have escalated to Rs 77 crore with interest and penalty,” a source from Adani said.
