Amrit Bharat Station scheme: Indian Railways’ long term vision to transform railway stations into vibrant city centers

The Ministry of Railways has initiated the ‘Amrit Bharat Station scheme’ inspired by the successful redevelopment of Rani Kamlapati Station, Gandhinagar Capital Station, and Sir M. Visveswaraya Terminal Station. This scheme aims to enhance 1318 identified railway stations by improving facilities such as access, waiting areas, toilets, Wi-Fi, and more.

Under this scheme, stations will undergo continuous development through phased master plans focusing on amenities, connectivity, sustainability, and integration with city infrastructure. The emphasis is on creating inclusive spaces for all passengers, including those with disabilities, and promoting local products through initiatives like ‘One Station One Product’.

Innovative concepts
The scheme prioritises environmentally friendly solutions, modern infrastructure like ballast-less tracks, and innovative concepts such as ‘Roof Plazas’. The long-term vision includes transforming stations into vibrant city centers, fostering multimodal integration, and enhancing passenger experience through improved services and infrastructure.

Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronic & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, provided this information in response to a question in Rajya Sabha.
