No cancellation fee on tickets cancelled within 24 hours of booking

In a big respite from cancellation charges for air passengers, the aviation has proposed lock-in period of 24 hours from cancellation charges.

However, a ticket booked 96 hours (4 days) before the flight will not be eligible for cancellation fee waiver.

“No cancellation charges within 24 hours a ticket is booked provided the ticket is booked 96 hours before flight departure,” said Jayant Sinha, may mister of state for aviation.

In the draft on passenger charters released today, the government has also said that the cancellation fee can, in no condition, be more than the base fare.

“Earlier, travel agents or OTAs cancellation fee used to be more than the base fare. Under the new passenger charter, it cannot be more than the base even after including cancellation fee charged by agents,” said B S Bhullar, DG of Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Aviation secretary R N Choubey said that the draft would likely be final within a period of one month.

On WiFi on planes, Choubey said that the telecom ministry would decide on licensing condition with a week’s time and passengers should be able to enjoy wifi on board within a period of two months.
