NEW DELHI: The Centre’s Commission on Air Quality Management (CAQM) has said that coal-based power plants must target 5% co-firing of biomass and straw pellets by September 30 this year and increase the target to 10% by December 2023.
“Initiate immediate steps to co-fire biomass-based pellets (with focus on paddy straw utilisation) with coal through a continuous and uninterrupted supply chain targeting at least 5% co-firing of biomass pellets, latest by September 30, 2023, and at least 10% co-firing by December 31, 2023,” the CAQM’s March 17 order said.
Co-firing or co-burning is a technique of burning alternative fuel, such as biomass, along with coal while using the same combustion technology in power plants.
