The much awaited construction of two-lane Wayil bridge over Nallah Sindh on Kangan-Wayil-Ganderbal road has been finally approved for execution to begin soon, official said.
The approval for the bridge funded by World Bank came following strong resentment among the local residents against long delay in its construction.
The road is one of Kashmir valley’s busiest.
Greater Kashmir has learned that though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) started construction work on the bridge in 1988-89 by building two abuts and a center pillar, but in 1990 it was left halfway.
Later in 1992, floods completely destroyed the two abuts and the centre pillar. The floods also caused massive damage to a single-lane wooden bridge constructed in 1960 over Nallah Sindh which was situated meters away from the existing one.
