BENGALURU: While gearing up to roll out the ambitious Gruha Jyothi scheme on Saturday, the state government is keeping its fingers crossed over the unprecedented surge in demand for power. While Karnataka witnessed a record consumption of 12,000MW on Thursday, the sudden shutting down of several units of three major thermal power stations has triggered concerns over steady availability of power in the coming days.
Citing wet coal from the coalfields of eastern India and scheduled technical maintenance, seven out of the 12 units at three thermal plants have shut down for the past few days. Consequently, the state is generating only 1,000MW (20%) of the 5,000MW installed thermal power.
