Vande Metro, Indian Railways’ new bet for short distance premium travel, is all set to roll out early 2024. The Vande Metro project was first announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the post Budget 2023 briefing on railways. Inspired from the Vande Bharat Express trains, the Vande Metro will provide the option of faster, rapid air-conditioned commuting for shorter distances at speeds of up to 130 kmph.
Sharing details about the project, ICF GM BG Mallya told ET that the Vande Metro trains will be designed for travel distances of up to 300 kilometers. “The Vande Metro was conceived as a replacement for what we call as Mainline EMU. So it is going to be for these shorter leads of 250 to 300 kilometers,” Mallya said.
