Uttar Pradesh government pushes reforms in energy sector with Rs 31,000 crore scheme

The state government in its budget of 2022-23 announced an ambitious ‘Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme’, a reform-based and result-linked scheme with an outlay of Rs 31,000 crore in association with the central government.

An arrangement of Rs 5,530 crore has been made under the budget. The scheme will be completed within the next three years.

The scheme aims to improve quality, reliability and affordability of power supply to consumers through a financially sustainable and operationally efficient distribution sector.

The BJP-led government has also made a provision of Rs 1,000 crore to ensure uninterrupted power supply in rural areas from 7 pm to 6 am during summers.

In a pro-farmer stance, the government has also made a provision of 50% discount on electricity bills of private tube-well consumers from January 1, 2022.

Under ‘Babu Ji Kalyan Singh Gram Unnati Yojana’, a provision of Rs 22.5 crore has been made to install solar street-lights on the roads of all villages in Uttar Pradesh.
