A regional mayor has launched a petition addressed to Air India and the Government of India calling for the national flag carrier to introduce direct flights between Birmingham and Mumbai.
West Midlands mayor Andy Street CBE, former managing director of British department store John Lewis, together with the West Midlands Combined Authority, launched the petition called, ‘We need a direct flight to Mumbai from Birmingham’ on change.org three days ago. It is quite unusual for a British mayor to start a petition and address it to a sovereign government.
Approximately 500,000 PIOs live in the Midlands, with a significant number in Birmingham, Leicester, Northampton, Nottingham, Sandwell and Wolverhampton. There is a direct flight between Birmingham and Delhi, but Air India has never operated one between Birmingham and Mumbai.
