The government has extended the deadline for states to join the debt restructuring scheme for power distribution companies by a year to March 2017, a move that will help more states to adopt the package for reforms that can transform the power sector.
Earlier, the scheme required states to take over 50 pc of their discom debt by March 2016 and another 25 pc by this financial year. As per the change approved, states can take over 75 pc debt by March 2017 and need not stagger it.
