Suri: A fire that broke out at Sainthia power station in Birbhum on Thursday afternoon gutted a transformer and triggered power pangs in the business town and its surrounding areas. Fire tenders from Suri and Sainthia brought the blaze under control.
Sources at WBSETCL suspect a short circuit sparked the fire, but an official investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. A large rural area of Mayureswar development block is served by the power station. Officials said the transformer would be replaced by Friday to restore normal supply.
Debashish Saha, a social worker in Sainthia, said they had requested power department to make alternative arrangements till then. “There are a number of oil and rice mills in Sainthia. Apart from the municipality area, people in Mayureswar and Kotasur are bearing the brunt,” he added.
