N-Power has been put in top gear. The Nuclear Power play is the major theme, content and roadmap of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy and meetings with Heads of Government. And therefore one after the other we have seen major civil nuclear cooperation agreements being signed, with Australia, Canada, France & Russia. These agreements are about the supply of uranium, provisioning of equipment, production and application of radioisotopes, technical training, nuclear safety, management of radioactive waste and other security related dimensions. India has also signed a civil nuclear cooperation with Sri Lanka whereby the island nation will stand to benefit from India’s expertise.
The Modi government has committed itself to tripling India’s existing nuclear power capability of 4,780 MW in ten years time. This is impelled by four factors, First, the mammoth energy demand situation of the country, Second, the cost advantage, Third, meeting of the emission norms and Fourth redefining the energy mix of the country in the long run.
