Cuddalore: An expert team constituted by the Tamil Nadu pollution control board (TNPCB) has commenced the work to collect water samples from 33 villages in and around NLC India Limited’s (NLCIL) thermal power plants and mines for testing following a direction from the National green tribunal (NGT).
The team started collecting samples from overhead tanks, taps and borewells among other water bodies. The NGT took suo moto cognizance based on environment study by eco-friendly firms claiming high levels of mercury, selenium, and fluoride in drinking water in many villages near Neyveli, Cuddalore district and directed the authorities concerned to form an expert panel to examine the quality of drinking water.
