Amid an investigation over ephedrine worth Rs 8 crore allegedly being smuggled via air cargo to Australia and the United Kingdom, the Mumbai Crime Branch has come across an important detail. In six months preceding the arrests in the case, there were nearly 72 instances when such contraband is believed to have been sent abroad, officials privy to the matter said. Ephedrine, a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, is also used in the treatment and management of hypotension.
Police are suspecting the involvement of some officials employed at the airport. So far, seven arrests have been made in the case after a raid at an Andheri shop on March 15.
