Hydro power project developers are queuing up to sell expensive electricity in poll-bound Uttarakhand, and the state government is making adhoc decisions, committing itself to buy power under 35-year long contracts, at high costs. This is when their own data indicate that they have surplus power during the summer months but have deficit during winter months. Buying more power from Hydro projects would only add to surplus capacity, and it would not help to cover-up the deficit during the winter season when the electricity generation is down to less than one-sixth level of its peak generation capacity.
