Chennai: The state highways department will soon begin construction of a new vehicular subway at Wimco Nagar railway crossing at an estimated cost of 21 crore.
The street at which this crossing is located connects Thiruvottiyur High Road (Chennai-Ennore Road) on the eastern side, and Manali-Jothi Nagar side on the west. On an average, the railway gate is closed 75 times a day to facilitate movement of local suburban trains.
“We wait for 15 to 20 minutes to reach the main road every day during peak hours. Traffic gets worse when bikers cross the lane and block vehicular flow in the opposite direction. So, once the gates are opened, vehicles get stuck in the middle,” said S Antony, a resident of Jothi Nagar.
