CHENNAI: Railway stations, especially suburban ones, are not going to be the dull and rundown facilities anymore. Those boxy, yellowred cement and limestone facades with uneven floors and jail-like grilled counters are set for a metamorphosis as Southern Railway plans to redevelop most of them into swanky, airport-like facilities in the next five to six years.
Work will begin to transform Chengalpet, Guduvancheri, Perambur, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Jolarpettai and Gummidipoondi. These stations would be ready by February next year.
