BENGALURU: Indian Railways recently announced that it completed electrifying 90% of its network in 2022-23. Closer home, South Western Railway, which manages 84% of Karnataka’s network and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Maharashtra, completed electrifying 72% of its tracks in the same financial year.
In 2023-24, 382km of rail has been commissioned for electrification.
This electrification process, both nationally and regionally, has been done for broad-gauge (BG) rail. According to the railways’ 2021 figures, about 80% of its network in the country is BG. In Karnataka, or more specifically for SWR, 72% of its BG network has been electrified so far.
