MUMBAI: Taking a cue from the aviation industry’s black-box technology, Indian Railways have decided to install an audio-visual recording system inside the motorman and guard cabins and CCTV cameras on the exterior of suburban trains to aid investigations into the cause of accidents as well as for crew performance assessment.
In the 2022-23 Budget, the railway ministry has sanctioned around Rs 2.5 crore for installation of the audiovisual technology in all 226 suburban rakes across Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR).
In the Mumbai region, WR has already installed the technology in 25 of its locomotives. “We will be able to complete the installation in all 113 rakes by December,” Sumit Thakur, WR chief public relations officer, said.
