CHENNAI: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement on one crore households getting 300 units of free electricity each month through rooftop solar panels under Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana has been largely welcomed. But experts have insisted on the need to formulate clear guidelines for the removal and disposal of aging solar panels to avoid environment damage.
An official from Tangedco said the scheme would go a long way in reducing monthly bills and allowing households to save up to Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000 annually. Households can also sell surplus energy to distribution companies.
