After a delay of more than six months, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has started the process of replacing the existing traditional meters with smart meters. As of now, it has replaced around 4,000 meters in the city and fixed a target to replace 1.4 lakh meters, including 1.2 lakh meters in five subdivisions of Karnal city and 20,000 meters in the Gharaunda subdivision, by the end of April 2020.
As per the authorities, these meters are GPRS-equipped, which will help the UHBVN get the real-time data on usage and provide both pre-paid and post-paid facilities.
The UHBVN launched the project of smart meters in October. It had even fixed a target to replace 5,000 meters by the end of November last year to ensure transparency in billing system, but it could not be started due to non-availability of meters. It received meters in March.
