SECL to adopt Miyawaki plantation method, invests Rs 4 crore in pilot project

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, will be implementing the Miyawaki method of plantation in its Gevra Area in Chhattisgarh. This pilot project, aimed at enhancing the green cover in the coal belt region, is backed by an investment of Rs 4 crore in partnership with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN).

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, is known for its rapid growth and dense greenery. SECL’s initiative involves planting approximately 20,000 saplings over a two-year period, covering a two-hectare area. The selection of plants includes a variety of big, medium, and small species, chosen for their low maintenance needs and ability to withstand harsh conditions.

This project is expected to significantly benefit the local communities and wildlife around the Gevra mine, which is the largest coal mine in the country. The development of this dense forest area is anticipated to assist in dust absorption and surface temperature regulation.

Moreover, SECL has planned an extensive green initiative with a substantial investment of Rs 169 crore over the next four years. This includes an agreement with CGRVVN and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (MPRVVN) for plantation activities in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, extending from 2023-24 to 2027-28, with maintenance for the subsequent four years.

SECL’s commitment to environmental preservation is further exemplified by its record of planting over three crore saplings since its inception. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the company achieved the highest green cover among all Coal India subsidiaries, planting 10.77 lakh saplings across 475 hectares.
