CHENNAI: It looks like Southern Railway should learn a lesson or two from Chennai metro rail to promote multi modal transport. Though double discharge platforms have been built at Egmore and Guindy to make it easier for suburban commuters to access metro rail trains, railways is yet to provide signage or make announcements inside the trains or at stations informing the passengers about presence of metro rail stations or bus stops at these points.
Suburban trains connect metro stations at St Thomas Mount, Guindy, Egmore and Central but suburban trains or stations do not have any indication that commuters can access metro or buses. Announcements are not made informing passengers about the commuting options that are available outside the stations.
Recently, commuters on a suburban train that arrived at Egmore railway station were confused as to which side of the train to alight. A few people were heard spotting the metro station on one side and were seen hopping off. The digital display boards inside the trains were not working. There was no announcement at the station or inside the coaches.
