The Indian Railways has awarded a Rs 245 crore tender for the supply of axles to TZ (Taizhong) Hong Kong, which has direct links to the Chinese government. The company will supply 30,000 axles for wagons used by the railways for freight movement.
The railways had earlier awarded a tender to TZ for the supply of wheels.
“India does not have enough capacity to make wheels. Axle manufacturing, on the other hand, is something India is fairly comfortable with,” said a sector watcher, who did not wish to be identified. “So, the award to a Chinese company raises some eyebrows.”
