BENGALURU: In another stride towards harnessing renewable energy, the energy department is awaiting approval from the central government for its detailed project report (DPR) to instal a pumped storage hydel power system on Sharavathi river. Officials say the process of securing approval is in an advanced stage.
Pumped storage hydel power projects are preferred for their flexibility in adapting to fluctuations in demand for electricity. When demand is low, water is pumped from a reservoir at a lower level to one at a higher level. When demand is high, water from the upper reservoir is again released to generate electricity.
