The concerted drive against theft of power and unauthorised use of electricity launched by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in Central Zone has yielded rich dividends with detection of as many as 6,569 cases of theft and unauthorised use of electricity (UUE) and recovery of Rs 9.72 crore from the offenders in the past four months.
Giving details, PSPCL chief engineer (Central Zone) DPS Grewal told The Tribune that during this period, teams of the distribution wing of four circles in the zone checked connections/premises of nearly 64,000 consumers and unearthed 2,851 cases of theft by kundi connection or meter tempering while 3,718 cases of UUE (electricity used for other purpose than supplied or connected load more than sanctioned load). An amount of Rs 5.58 crore as penalty was recovered in theft cases while those in the UUE category had to pay Rs 4.13 crore.
