Workers of the mass organisations on Wednesday staged a protest against the state government’s decision to impose power tariff hike from June 1. Workers of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, blocked the traffic on Tarn Taran-Dialpura road and burnt an effigy of the state government. Sawinder Singh Chulata, state leader of the organisation, while addressing the gathering, said the power rates were already higher than that of other states. The state government has imposed a burden of more than Rs 564 crore on the residents of the state, which is unbearable.
Workers raised slogans against the state government and demanded a roll back of the hiked rates. Meanwhile, CPI leaders Prithipal Singh Marimegha and Devinder Sohal stated that people of the state were already under financial stress and the recent hike in power rates was beyond their capacity. — OC
