CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu’s power consumption this Pongal was the lowest in recent years. Power consumption on Wednesday, when the state celebrated ‘Kaanum Pongal’, was 219 million units, against 274 million units registered during last year’s Pongal. It is lower than the power consumption last Diwali, when it was 244.96 million units.
Sources in Tangedco attributed the lower consumption to general economic slowdown, which had to a large extent affected industrial power consumption. While industrial units are shut during all festivals every year, the slowdown was a major reason behind the lower power consumption this year during Pongal, sources said.
Meanwhile, Tangedco has also been able to juggle its power production by keeping many of its thermal units on standby and meeting the power demand with power sourced from central units and private power companies since the tariff was low.
