Coal fired power plants cause pollution but they are also necessary to have stable sources of power supply. The option is to choose between more harmful or less harmful solutions: old vs new, low capacity vs high capacity, coal vs lignite, and low PLF vs high PLF. Old plants consume much more coal compared to new units. Similarly, low capacity units consume more coal. Lignite powered units emit more CO2 compared to coal powered.
