Petrol sales up 3%, diesel up 5% in October

Sales of petrol and diesel rose 3% and 5% year-on-year, respectively, in October helped by increased mobility and consumption during the festive season, showed provisional sales data of state-run oil companies.

Sales figures for the entire industry, including the private firms, will be published by the oil ministry by November 10, which may show higher fuel consumption growth as the private sector has been experiencing sharper increase in sales for several months.

Sales of aviation turbine fuel rose 6.9% year-on-year in October and cooking gas 5.3%.

Movement of goods and people tend to rise during the festive season, increasing demand for transportation fuels. Sales of cars, two-wheelers, apparel, white goods, and several other consumer products jump during the festive season. This leads to a spurt in factory activity and transportation, boosting fuel demand.

Compared to October 2019, petrol sales are up 25% and diesel 19%.
