Petrol and diesel prices have remained static for long now providing relief to consumers who were a harried lot as the spectre of frequent hikes burnt a hole in their pockets.
The government had cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and diesel by Rs 10 per litre on the eve of Diwali last year. The reduction in excise brought down the pump prices from record highs. The move from the Centre government saw states chipping in with reduction in state taxes which further brought down the prices.
