Effective Sales Taxes on petrol & diesel is very high in many states. Madhya Pradesh tops the list followed by Andhra, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab and Telangana. In the last three years, the states have increased the taxes, while the centre has also increased the central excise duty (CED) from time to time. However, the central customs duty (CCD) rate on petrol and diesel is the same at 2.5 per cent since April 2014. Also, the centre does not charge any CSD and CED on kerosene and domestic LPG.
