NEW DELHI: State-run NTPC, the country’s largest coal-fired power producer, is going nuclear as the government shifts focus on the nascent SMR (smaller modular reactor) technology in search of clean energy for achieving net zero by 2070.
“This is the new thing that you would probably be hearing that we are bringing and are seriously thinking on this,” company CMD Gurdeep Singh had told the 18th analysts and investors meet in August.
Sources said the company is looking at adding 20-30 gigawatts (GW) nuclear capacity by 2040, an ambitious target that may be hard to achieve, in addition to its solar capacity addition.
