NEW DELHI: State-run NTPC is looking at replacing part of the coal it burns at Bongaigaon plant in Assam with fuel derived from bamboo, which grows in abundance in the north-east.
The country’s largest generation utility proposes to use Finnish bio-refinery technology to turn bamboo into bio-coal which will be mixed with regular coal to fire up the plant. It has tied up with Chempolis India, a Fortum group associate company and a leading technology provider, to explore the feasibility of building the bio-refinery.
The MoU between the two companies was signed in the presence of NTPC director (HR) Dillip Kumar Patel, EIL director (HR) Ashok Kumar Kalra and Chempolis CEO Markus Alholm, the company said.
