North India’s largest floating solar power plant opens in Chandigarh

North India’s largest floating solar power plant of 2000kWp at waterworks, Sector 39, and a 500kWp floating solar project with fountains at Dhanas lake were inaugurated by UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit here on Monday.

The Sector 39 solar plant has been installed at Rs.11.70 crore, including 10 years operation and maintenance and the 500kWp solar plant with fountains at Dhanas lake at Rs 3.34 crore, including 10 years O&M.

The projects have been designed and executed by Crest (Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society), UT, and will generate a minimum of 35 lakh Units(kWh) of solar energy per year with 20% module efficiency.

Debendra Dalai, secretary, science & technology, UT, said the energy needs of all buildings and offices under the forest department will be met through the project installed at Dhanas lake.

He further added that 70% of the revenue generated from the 2000kWp floating SPV power plant would be deposited in government treasury and balance 30% given to the municipal corporation.

He said Chandigarh is a landlocked city and rooftop solar is the only option for green electricity generation but these floating solar power plants aid in the generation of electricity while conserving valuable land space of Chandigarh and this initiative is assisting in lowering evaporation loss to accommodate water needs of 20,000 people annually.
