NEW DELHI: Eight industry bodies representing fertiliser, aluminium, textiles, sponge iron and captive power producers have jointly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore normal coal supply, saying the continued fuel shortage has put many industries in peril.
The situation has worsened further in the last few weeks due to further curtailment of supplies by rail, rail-cum-road and road modes, pushing many units to the brink of closure, especially coal-consuming units in the non-regulated sectors (NRS), the associations said in their joint letter to the PM.
“This adverse situation that started around August/September last year became further arduous as coal stock at many plants plunged below critical level. The demand-supply ratio had shown signs of improvement during November 202. However, coal supply to NRS consumers, including CPPs (captive power plants) has plummeted once again despite October-March being the highest production months for Coal India Ltd,” the letter said.
