For three hours on Wednesday night, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport airside looked like a film set. An aircraft with 210 passengers had collided with a cargo plane leading to a fire and four casualties.
The situation which was responded to with utmost seriousness and the Standard Operating Procedure being followed in detail, was in reality a mock drill and part of a regulatory compliance exercise planned by the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).
The exercise began when a simulated freighter aircraft (Flight No. XYZ 123, from Zurich-Mumbai) was set on fire while landing, as it collided with a passenger flight PQR 102 on ground. The Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting team of MIAL along with Mumbai Fire brigade personnel extinguished the fire.
