KOCHI: With the Southwest Monsoon at the doorstep, concerns raised by a section of meteorologists about a possible extreme weather event have been keeping Kerala on its toes. There has been a growing demand to bring a flood protocol to maintain the water level in dams to avoid a 2018-like situation. However, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) which manages 57 dams is not panicky.
“We have a ‘Rule Curve’ to maintain the water level in dams and an emergency action plan approved by the Central Water Commission. According to the rule curve, we have to maintain a fixed water level every 10 days and the full storage level can be achieved only on November 30. When the water level in Idukki dam reaches 4 feet below the rule level, we will issue a blue alert.
