Following an order by the Supreme Court, Metro authorities on Monday started felling trees in Aarey Colony at the site where a car shed for the proposed Metro 3 will be built.
In an order on April 17, the Supreme Court had allowed the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to fell 177 trees, instead of its earlier petition of felling 84 trees.
The felling of trees started from 5 am on Monday morning after Metro authorities deployed heavy police protection near the plot.
Sources in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said after the SC had allowed felling of trees, the civic body had issued requisite permission to execute the job and the drive is carried out by the MMRCL.
