CHENNAI: Traffic may soon be down to a crawl as metro rail work moves into Nungambakkam. CMRL has started barricading a small portion of the road on the Sterling Road-College Road junction to begin initial ground work. Underground construction is likely to begin next year. At present, more than 22 localities in the city and suburbs have been barricaded for metro rail work and peak hour vehicle speed has reduced to 10kmph in these areas.
In Nungambakkam, two underground stations have been planned Nungambakkam and Sterling Road Junction part of corridor-3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot. The 118.9km phase-2 is expected to be ready by 2026.
CMRL officials said construction work may begin in 2023, as the contract will be awarded by the end of this year. “We have started barricading in Nungambakkam area only for utility identification work as of now,” said L Girirajan, PRO, CMRL.
