CHENNAI: Covid-19 tests are likely to be made permanent for passengers arriving from abroad in the future at Chennai airport.
A lab to test passengers is being set up at the international arrival terminal and is likely to start functioning in two weeks.
An official said, “RT-PCR testing is going to be a permanent feature for international travel.”
Passengers with flu-like symptoms will be tested at the airport lab as the existing system of staff from the state government’s health department collecting samples and testing passengers may not continue after pandemic restrictions are lifted.
“The lab is being set up because there is a perception that airports should have their own facilities as the tests on passengers either with symptoms or those who arrive without a negative certificate, may be here to stay for several months,” he added.
