KOLKATA: The key construction work at Nirmal Chunder Street may have been deferred, but KMRC is steadily getting on with the other crucial job in the troubled 2.5km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch of East-West Metro. It has just completed piling work for the emergency exit shaft at Durga Pituri Lane, the nucleus of the largescale subsidence of the August 2019 in which at least 23 houses collapsed.
TOI had reported on November 2, 2022 about the evacuation shaft emerging as the solution to the subsidence issues for the last leg of East-West Metro, which currently operates 9.2km from Sector V to Howrah Maidan. It is replacing three cross passages in the cave-in zone that were meant for passengers to use to move from one tunnel to another in case of an emergency.
