BENGALURU: Opposition parties on Thursday criticised the state government’s decision to increase power tariffs, saying people should not be burdened with higher charges while they are coping with the financial pain caused by the pandemic.
Randeep Singh Surjewala, general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and the party’s Karnataka incharge, tweeted that the government should roll back the hike. “Lakhs of people have lost livelihoods and businesses and industries have suffered losses because of the lockdown. The anti-people @BJP-4Karnataka has suddenly hiked electricity tariff by 40 paise per unit. I urge the government to take back the decision immediately,” he wrote.
Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S) said utility charges should not be increased for at least a year.
