NEW DELHI: As many as 60 planes belonging to Jet Airways are now out of operation as the struggling airlines was forced to ground four more aircraft on Monday. This means that almost half of its fleet of 119 is now grounded.
A number of flights were cancelled following the grounding of the planes, but neither the airlines nor the authorities has given the exact number of flights Jet is currently operating.
The sharp reduction in number of Jet’s flights comes amid reduction of capacity by other carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir, leading to a surge in spot fares.
The peak summer travel season, that lasts from April to early July, is now less than a fortnight away. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has called a meeting of airlines on Tuesday on the issue of rising fares.
