India leads G20 in green energy transition; pledges $25 mn for digital growth in global South

In a strategic push for global environmental and energy reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid out India’s pivotal role in advancing the international green agenda.

Addressing the G20 Virtual Leaders’ Summit, PM Modi said, “Through the Global Biofuels Alliance launched in New Delhi, we are reducing carbon as well as promoting the development of alternative fuels,” positioning India at the forefront of the transition to sustainable energy sources.

He also drew attention to India’s implementation of green credits and the G20’s adoption of the mission LiFE initiative, setting an ambitious target to expand renewable energy use threefold by the year 2030. With the critical climate conference COP-28 on the horizon, Modi underscored the necessity for “concrete steps” towards these goals, signifying a significant period for global environmental policy.

In a notable development for digital cooperation, PM Modi unveiled the completion of a comprehensive Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, which encompasses a diverse array of over 50 digital public goods from 16 different countries. Complementing this technological leap, the prime minister announced the formation of a Social Impact Fund, kick-started by India’s initial pledge of $25 million, designed to facilitate the adoption of these digital public infrastructures in developing nations of the Global South.

Shifting to social advancements, PM Modi spotlighted India’s commitment to gender equality with the revelation of a landmark policy decision. “India has taken a historic decision in the first session of its new Parliament House,” he stated, committing to a 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies, a move that promises to significantly alter the landscape of Indian politics and society.
