CHENNAI: The state highways axed 374 trees from Pakkam New Colony in Thiruninravur till Thamaraipakkam on Friday for the upcoming Chennai Peripheral Ring Road project. “The two-lane road will become a four-lane road, and its width will be expanded from 14 metres to 15 metres,” a highways official said.
Locals were alarmed at the sight of trees of 50-60 years being cut. “I saw a couple of tamarind trees being axed. The road has large trees such as banyan and peepal. It is disheartening to see the trees we grew up with being cut,” said Pandiarajan P, a resident.
