The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has announced that Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is facing delays of up to 2 hours in flight operations due to complications with its air traffic radar automation system. The system, which experienced downtime from 3 pm to 5:15 pm, has led to a backlog of departing aircraft.
According to officials, the automation system at Mumbai airport has been plagued by glitches and malfunctions. Last year, the Air Traffic Controllers Guild raised concerns in a letter to the Airports Authority of India and MoCA, highlighting the outdated nature of the air traffic radar automation system. The hardware for the current system is more than 18 years old, exceeding its estimated lifespan of 10 years.
