MUMBAI: Dubai-based carrier Emirates on Monday said that it has returned over Rs 9,985 crore ($ 1.4 billion) in COVID-19 related travel refunds to date. The airline referred to the refunds it has made so far as “strong and steady progress on its commitment to customers to complete pending refunds”.
“More than 1.4 million refunds requests have been completed since March, representing 90% of the airline’s backlog. This includes all requests received from customers around the world up until the end of June, save for a few cases which require further manual review,” said the Emirates statement.
The ministry of civil aviation in an affidavit filed recently before the Supreme Court said that foreign carriers will have to issue refunds to passengers within 15 days as there is no credit shell facility allowed for foreign operators. The ministry’s affidavit was in response to a petition filed by a consumer rights organisation which prayed for complete refunds to be paid to passengers for flights cancelled during the COVID lockdown.
